Many of us are probably in the same boat – we have graduated from some great universities and have attended 1-2 alumnae events only to realize that the focus tends to be much more about the local bar scene than fostering key business relationships. Yet there’s so much potential to engage with fellow alumnae and share valuable insights and possibly even business opportunities.
That’s why Scott Bailey, Senior Director of Partnerships for MassChallenge and a fellow UVM alumni, along with me and several others conceived of and formed UVME, an affinity group of the University. With a goal of building a group of highly motivated alumnae from a variety of business backgrounds who would focus on various aspects of entrepreneurship, we worked with Scott’s network and strong university ties to not only recruit new members but also work with the University and take advantage of the business minds that would be valuable to this group.
With all of this underway, we kicked off our first event last month at HubSpot with the
company’s founder and CEO (also a UVM alum and T3 Advisors client), Brian Halligan, speaking to a group of 90 alumnae about launching a business and raising capital. With some great food and beer, an awesome speaker, senior UVM faculty in attendance and alums ranging from the graduating class of 1970 to 2013, it was a killer event! For 2/3 of our members, this was also their first UVM event post graduation which is incredible.
So what’s next for UVME? A lot! Our next event is scheduled for November 12th at the MassChallenge headquarters where our speaker will be Michael Fallman, the founder of the British Beer Company. Additionally, UVM President Thomas Sullivan will be joining and speaking. Mostly, the founders of UVME are incredibly excited about what the future holds for this group which includes monthly events and the opportunity for alumnae to showcase their companies.
